Every homeowner is likely to experience cleaning up after unintended water buildup from a heavy rainfall, flood or pipe burst. Accumulated water that is clean and small in quantity can be cleaned up without much trouble but a flood is a different story. Many find the task of cleaning after a flood very tedious that they choose to employ the services of flood damage cleanup services instead of doing the cleanup themselves.

Hiring a professional flood damage cleanup services can be worth it if flood have been present over a few days and some parts of your home such as the basement still has large quantities of accumulated water in them. The key to minimizing water damage is working quickly to remove the water and dry every surface. And if you have a large house, this can be impossible to do on your own especially if it is your first time cleaning up after a flood.

A flood damage cleanup is not only tedious but dangerous as well. And, hiring a flood damage cleanup services may also be worth it if you want to avoid exposing your family to health hazards. The first and most evident hazard following a flood is the bacteria present in the flood waters. Flood is a breeding ground of bacteria and other dangerous microorganisms.

In addition to harmful microorganisms, you or your family may also be in the danger of structural accidents. Water may have weakened you home’s foundations or walls. And although the ceiling may not have been immersed in water, it may also collapse. Water vapor can weaken the ceiling especially if flood water was present over a few days.

On the other hand, hiring a pro for a flood damage cleanup may not be worth it if you hire one that doesn’t have enough experience and expertise. Not all flood damage cleanup services are the same and you have to carefully choose one before you go into a contract. You will want to look for a company that have enough experience and has the right tools for the job. Tools and equipment can make a lot if difference in a cleanup since they can effectively remove water and dry all surfaces in as little time possible.

A flood damage cleanup is both a tedious and dangerous task. Fortunately, there are companies who specialize in this task. It can be worth hiring one especially if structural damage is suspected and if you choose a company that has enough experience and has the right tools.

Diverting another disaster from happening in an area where flood usually occur is what most families hope for when it comes to doing flood control. Flood is not something most homeowners expect to happen to them. Even though flood is much as part of nature, most of the life-altering events we’ve seen is disturbing enough made worse by poor river engineering and eventually caused more flood in the U.S.

The catastrophe flood brings to a home could be such an overpowering experience to the homeowners. Seeing that your area submerged in water and your possessions drenched and probably in need of restoring could be some of the things you would be experiencing after the flood subside.

The good news about today’s technology and resources is that they offer wide range of help in doing flood control which if effectively done and followed would contribute to a lesser damage to properties and lives.

In order to prepare for flood control in areas where flood usually happens, people should create a flood control plan which would prepare them in the event of heavy floods. When doing flood control, one should consider their safety first before anything else. That is why they always have to think of alternative solutions if the flood becomes worse.

In the event that flood becomes higher than expected, it is better to put those flood control plan into action, like evacuating the place and going to an alternative route where flood may not be worse. Don’t forget to bring with you materials that you would need for a couple of days.

Having a flood control plan before a flood happens would create a much bigger difference in the success of not having water in your home. Listening to the news and knowing about the gravity of the flood that could occur to your area would be of relevance to you.

Preparing dikes or sandbags to put around your home would be of really great assistance or getting elongated interlocking flexible tubes surrounding your home would help in not letting any flood enter your home.

Turn off any electrical appliances and the main switch is important during those crucial times. Also, close any gas switches and be sure that all faucets are also closed. These 3 important reminders should be done as a precaution to possible harm brought about by flood.

Remove all items that flood might get in touch with. Before the flood comes, it is better to take them out so that the possible extend of damage would not be that big. Carpets and rugs that could be easily damaged by water should be rolled up and put in a safer area. The same goes for other materials such as electrical appliances and paper materials.

Dealing with flood control should be done as calm and as fast as any homeowners can do. Remember that in any flood situation, being safe should be the concern at hand. Knowing that the force of nature is mostly unpredictable should keep you on a safeguard.

One of the worst things a homeowner experiences in a home is a flooded basement. There are actually a number of reasons why the basement floods but whatever the reason is, you must act quickly when it happens. Avoiding it, of course, is the best way to go.

There are some important factors in a basement that should be regularly checked as these can help to prevent a flooded basement. Some of these are listed below.

Cracks :Re-caulking is one of the best ways to prevent flooded basement. Cracks on the walls may cause saturated water in the ground to seep through. Paint that has water sealant property should be put in finishing the basement.

Water pipe: There is a tendency that the water will burst out in the basement due to old pipes. Replace the old pipes with new ones to prevent a flooded basement.

Downspouts: Incorrect position of the downspouts can cause the water to flow towards the home’s foundation walls instead of away from it. Simply redirecting the flow of water with the use of cement blocks or tiles is enough to ward off the flood to the basement.

Lawns: Another factor that causes a flooded basement is uneven lawns or low areas that may collect rain water and could enter the basement through cracks and basement windows. Lawns that are splattering towards the house will naturally make rain water flow to the house. Dig out water pathways to redirect the flow of water or try filling low areas of the yard with soil to make the yard even. Either way, this is to redirect the water away from the house or towards the street

Windows: Poorly-closed storm windows can cause rain water to enter, often resulting in a flooded basement. Make sure that the storm windows are properly closed during strong rains. If necessary, apply a water sealant around the edges of the windows.

Gutters: Clogged up gutters can cause water to be redirected towards the basement. Regularly checking up and clean up the gutters can ensure that there are no materials inside the gutters and anything that can obstruct the water from its regular flow. This helps in preventing a flooded basement from happening.

Sewage pipes and water drainage systems: Check the above to prevent sewage pipes and water drainage systems to swell up and the excess water flow out which is located underneath the house. Try to avoid pouring slimy or gooey materials through the kitchen drains which is sometimes hard to avoid doing especially when it has become a habit. Practice throwing them out in the garbage bags. This is a good practice to slim down the possibility of flooding.

The best way to correct this problem is by tracking and assessing the cause of flooding. If flooding still exists even after correcting all that has been listed above, that is the time to shell out some money and hire an expert to do the work for you and renovate your flood-prone basement.

Water is one of the most long-term destructive substances in a house. It can easily dissolve or weaken wooden or soft materials supporting the growth of microorganisms on others. Since water has a natural force and flows it is able to carry with it a wide variety of pathogens and allergens harmful to humans. Hence sewage damage is one of the commonest problems faced by people all over the world.

Sewage damage poses a very dangerous threat to human health. However, the severity of the health threat depends on the amount and kind of the sewage and the degree and extent of spread into the building environment. The degree of penetration depends upon the properties of the contaminated materials, the quantity of sewage, and the amount of time the sewage remains in contact with materials.

When a house is affected by sewage damage, up from the septic lines, or flooding of a building is damaged by a heavy load of organic matter, as in the case of river flooding, a serious threat to human health exists. Without proper action, widespread damage to the households will occur right away. Several days will pass before the problem can be determined. The time lapse allows extensive permeation and contamination of absorbent materials such as wood, gypsum, paper, and concrete to occur. This absorption leads to the growth of potential diseases.

Issues of Concern Associated with the sewage damage problem

There are several factors that determine the remediation of the problem. These are the nature of the contamination, the types of water-damaged materials, the sewage micro flora, organic matter load, volume of water, and impact of the outdoor temperature and humidity of the indoor environment.

The routes of exposure of the building occupants to the micro-organisms are contact, ingestion, and inhalation. An improper job of cleaning and disinfection may leave a substrate for disease-causing microorganisms. Occupants may be infected by careless transmission of diseases from hands to mouth, or by inhalation of air bourne microbes. Microbial contaminants can also pass to other areas through foot.

Another aspect of sewage damage backflow or flooding is that this condition is conducive to the growth of non-sewage microorganisms. The wetness, humidity, and organic matter act as a breeding ground for other microbes. People with weak immune system or aged people who are susceptible to diseases and illness should be careful.

The factors to be considered, as a remedy from sewage damage comprises of the types of materials affected, assessment of the degree of damage, the extent of contaminated absorbent material, the total contact time, the humidity, and the amount of ventilation available. The primary goal of sewage damage cleanup must be the absolute removal and disposal of water and contamination utilizing the sanitary sewer system if possible. Wet extraction systems should be also used to remove sewage damage in entirety. While the cleaning process is going on it is necessary to remove the materials which are vulnerable to the sewage damage. These items can comprise of carpets, wall covering porous wallboard, and insulation, and other substrates with the potential for mold growth.

At times flood damage cannot be averted, no matter what precautionary measures you take, there is no way you can avert flood damage for sure. However certain steps can be taken in order to minimize as much damage as possible. In order to minimize damage you will first have to access the situation, and cover all possibilities of a flood, i.e. broken pipes, leaking faucets etc. The next step if to fix what might cause a flood. Try to use the best possible material in order to prevent water from leaking. When it comes to pipes and faucets you can never be sure of when they might give away, however you can make sure that you use the best possible material.

Water flows from a higher level to a lower level, in order to prevent water from getting to your work area all slopes must be made to lead to a drain. Preferably a slope should be manufactured that inclines towards a large drain. This will also prevent water from gathering in your toilet, kitchen etc. The biggest reason why most home / offices suffer flood damage is because the drain is not appropriate enough to accommodate a large gush of water. Having a large drain will solve much you’re your problem, but will not eliminate the issue completely. There should be two large drains or medium sized drains that allow water to exit via separate pipes, this will ensure that water doesn’t start gathering and flowing backup the slope.
Care should be taken to store important documents, papers, and other household items in a high and safe place. This should include, certificates, degrees, as well as other work related documents and your computer. If there is a chance of flood damage in your home office, make sure that your server room is water proof and higher up the slope. Toilets, kitchens and washrooms should all be at the bottom of the slope. However no matter how hard we try we can still become victims of flood damage. So in order to cope with the worst scenario we need to maintain backups of our important files and documents. A computer should be regularly backed up to a remote location. However this won’t stop flood damage from getting to your computer but it will stop it from ruining your data, which might require you to start from scratch.

We recommend that you should also get yourself insured, there is no guarantee that the measures you have taken to prevent flood damage will actually play out as predicted. Even if it does it can still ruin your equipment and your furniture, which can cost you a lot of money to replace or repair. A good insurance policy should be able to cover the financial aspect of your loss and bring you back on track soon. The backups you maintain would ensure that you experience minimum downtime which means that you lose less money because of the damage.

Not every water restoration service company can give you everything that you need in a water damage restoration operation. Companies that are able to do so do exist and it pays to know what to look for in one BEFORE the disaster strikes.

Bare in mind that water damage will always strike when you least expect it so it is important to know who to call the moment you’re hit by one. Time is a very important factor if you would like to salvage as much as you can from your water damaged property. Wasting your time in having to choose the right organization only after the disaster strikes could tantamount to irreversible damage for your water-sensitive possessions.

Some companies have a little extra to offer but here’s a list of the essential services:

24-hour availability – If a water restoration service can’t give you this, it’s definitely time to flip the yellow pages and move on to the next. Water damage won’t warn you before it strikes and it won’t do so on a scheduled time either so restoration service that is available round the clock should be a minimum requirement.

Complete disinfection and sanitation – The moment the water is pumped out, and your possessions are relatively dry; the next most important step is disinfection and sanitation. Professionals should be able to provide this basic water restoration service otherwise your premises would not be free from water borne health hazards.

Complete structural drying – It is not sufficient to extract water that is visible to you. You may expect a reasonable amount of water to have found their way in the less conspicuous areas of your building. A basic water restoration service must therefore include drying of these sections. Wall injection drying systems are the appropriate equipment for such situations so water restoration service companies should have them.

Dehumidifying – Dehumidifiers take away the inconvenience and the risk from the usual practice of taking out your wet possessions and laying them out in the open to dry. Some things such as paper-made products become very frail when wet and the act of transferring them can put them at risk of irreparable damage. With dehumidifiers, books and documents can be left on the shelves as they are dried.

Mold remediation – These little critters are probably the most underrated health hazards during restoration operations. Unknown to the common household, molds, which easily multiply 24 to 48 hours while water stays in your premises, can cause health complications that range from simple respiratory problems to death. The restoration company must therefore have the expertise and the right equipment to control and eliminate them.

Water and sewage extraction – A little water might be easy for you to deal with but you’ll never know how much water you’ll be up against so it would be best if the company is equipped enough to extract water in huge amounts. Check if they have flood pumps, wet vacuums, and flood extractors. These are basic equipment for this type of business so it would be almost impossible to find a company that doesn’t have them.

As stated earlier, these are basic services. If a water restoration service company can provide these and more, then you may jot down their contact numbers and put those in a place that is easily accessible. You’ll never know when you’ll need to call on them.

Water can damage almost every article and room of your house but we can minimize the damage by calling for water restoration services as soon as possible. Water damage may be caused by natural flooding, bursting of pipes, leakage of roof or pipes or lack of maintenance. It is important to diagnose the cause of water damage before calling for water restoration service providers.

In case of water damage due to leakage of pipe or roof, the leakage should be fixed before water restoration service team reaches. Similarly, if you face water damage because of faulty construction, you will need to correct it first. In case of flooding of water, water must be pumped out of the house before the restoration process can be started. Water restoration service usually offers:

Carpet restoration: Carpet restoration should be carried out only in the case of expensive carpets otherwise it’s not worth it. It is cheaper to throw away low-grade cheap carpets and buy new ones as compared to restoring them. Even if you possess good quality carpets, you must begin carpet restoration as soon as possible. If you delay carpet restoration for too long it may become impossible to restore it. Mildew and mold can begin to grow in wet carpets within no time. In case your carpet has pad attached to it, you will have to throw the pad away as that cannot be restored. To restore a carpet, all water must be extracted from it and it should be washed and cleaned with proper chemicals. Professional water restoration service personnel would treat it with fungicide and deodorant.

Fabric Restoration: Fabric restoration is fairly simple and you can carry it out on your own as well. You can simply wash your draperies, cushion covers, sheets and clothes in the washing machine with a detergent and let it dry in the sun. If your house were to be flooded with contaminated water, it would be best to call water restoration service providers’ experts for restoring fabrics as well. You can ask these experts to restore your fabrics on-site, as that would be the most economical solution. They can spot treat the stains on your fabrics as well as deodorize them.

Wood Restoration: wood can be restored most of the times provided it has not been damaged beyond the surface. Water damage restoration of wood can be carried out on-site or in a warehouse, depending upon the condition of the furniture and your house. Wood must first be dried in a drying chamber and then cleaned with a cleaner specially formulated for wood. This cleaning can remove chemical as well as sewage damage. The wooden furniture must be deodorized as well. Different types of oils can be used to restore the wooden furniture or wooden antique’s natural beauty. The water damage restoration process of wooden furniture is usually concluded with an appropriate polish finish.

Water restoration services include various other procedures like odor control, wooden floor restoration, and mold removal among many others. It is important to carry out these procedures to restore the house for living.

Water damage restoration professionals are equipped with expensive tools that are suitable to their nature of work. It is therefore sometimes foolhardy to try to implement a do-it-yourself approach to water damage. This is because we can never expect ourselves to be ready with such equipment. There is however one tool that we might want to keep – the moisture meter.

The moisture meter is one of the most indispensable tool among water damage restoration companies. It can’t remove water like the air mover, flood pumper, or dehumidifier. It also can’t clean the air like air scrubbers and ozone generators, but it can tell the water damage restoration expert if he’s job is done or whether there’s still more water than meets the eye. For an ordinary household member just like you, you can have a moisture meter on hand just so you can determine by yourself whether the moisture level of your house is still tolerable or whether it would be time contact the experts.

Moisture meters are hand-held devices, about the size of a multi-tester (or if you’re not familiar with a multi-tester, then twice the size of a calculator), that allow you to determine the moisture content in a given substance. Some of them are analog but there are also digital varieties. This device can come in very handy to water damage restoration crew members.

Moisture meters, previously suitable for wood only, have already evolved into more specific forms such as the concrete moisture meter. This modern version of the meter is capable of detecting moisture up to a depth 1-inch from the concrete surface. There are however moisture meters that are versatile enough to detect content in wood, dry wall, brick, plaster and concrete.

Since the ideal moisture content varies from one material to another, many of todays models allow you to preset a certain level of moisture on the meter. The moment this level is breached an alarm goes off. When you want to measure the content in another area, presumably having a different material, you simply set the meter to the newly desired level.

Some water damage restoration professionals use meters that are equipped with probes to allow for deep penetration readings.

Determining the moisture content of a given substance is important to water damage restoration professionals. Most structural and building materials such as wood and concrete may appear dry on the outside but can definitely still be wet in the inside. This is because water can creep into the grains or crevices through capillary action. The narrower the crevice, the deeper water can tunnel into.

This moisture, precisely in hard to reach areas such as crevices, can serve as a catalyst for the growth of hazardous organisms such as mold and mildew. The presence of moisture in these areas beyond 48 hours is enough to promote the growth of molds. It is therefore necessary to determine the moisture of walls, floors, ceilings and other portions of your house so that the necessary action can be implemented when it is determined that the moisture content in any of these areas is still too high for comfort.

Water damage restoration professionals are equipped with the right equipment, allowing them to prevent further harm to your water damaged possessions after your house is ravaged by a flood.

Aside from the air mover, a very important water damage restoration equipment is the flood pumper. While air movers are suitable for drying water-drenched possessions, flood pumpers is the only solution when your low-lying possessions are submerged in water. That is to say, if standing water still exists in your premises, a flood pumper is one of the water damage restoration crew’s best solutions. These powerful equipment typically run via a 20+ hp engine.

The 1st objective in any water damage restoration operation is to remove standing water. This is necessary since certain hazards might be lurking underneath those murky waters; snakes and rodents for example. Flood waters may also contain hazardous chemicals that can be irritating to the skin upon contact. One obvious reason would be that operations would be difficult to undertake if the crew is still surrounded with water.

Flood pumpers can remove huge amounts of standing water and store them in their portable containers so that you can dispose of them in another area. A typical flood pumper can remove 10.5 gallons of water per minute, storing them in an attached tank usually having a capacity of around 10 gallons. Due to the large amount of water that they can contain, flood pumpers are usually equipped with wheels so that transporting of the stored water can be easily done.

This water damage restoration equipment usually has a float system that enables it to shut-down the moment the tank becomes full. This is very similar to the float systems used in the tanks of toilet bowls.

As floodwaters are usually laden with debris, clogging of water removal systems were a common issue in the past. Nowadays, flood pumpers have multi-stage filtration systems that reduce the occurrences of these clogs, allowing for a longer, continuous, and problem-free water removal. More expensive systems are equipped with antimicrobial protections to allow for minimal maintenance.

To access hard to reach areas, flood pumps are attached with long intake hoses. Some setups are also equipped with drain hoses going up to as long as 50 feet. With this feature, the crew member won’t have to push the pump to another location in order to get rid of the collected water.

The usual price of this water damage restoration equipment is around $1,000+. It is therefore rather heavy on the pockets of an average household. Thus, to enjoy the benefits of this powerful equipment, flood victims either rent one out or hire professionals who have them.

The key to a successful water damage restoration operation is speed. The faster you can get rid of the water, the better are your chances of saving your water damaged possessions. What better solution then than a flood pump? This is one water damage restoration equipment that any water restorator must have.
